William Switzer & Associates, Ltd. Acquires the Exclusive Worldwide Rights to the Furniture Designs of Legendary Andre Arbus
William Switzer & Associates, Ltd., Suite 1850, manufacturer of exceptional antique reproduction furniture, announces the acquisition of the exclusive, worldwide license to manufacture the designs of Andre Arbus, one of the greatest 20th century designers in the Art Moderne tradition.
“William, Renee and I are thrilled to have acquired the rights to manufacture the designs of Andre Arbus,” states Allan Switzer, vice president and design director of William Switzer & Associates, Ltd. “Arbus’ status as one of the most important designers of the French Moderne period brings into the portfolio of William Switzer another legend from the world of design.”
Born in 1903, in Toulouse, France, Andre Arbus graduated from Ecole des Beaux Arts, before joining his father’s cabinet making firm, which he later headed. Though Arbus himself never practiced cabinetry, his popular modern designs, with their light, angular forms, gradually replaced the firm’s traditional 18th century styles. Inspired by the classicism of French Empire, Arbus rejected painting and marquetry, preferring finely grained veneers, parchment, lacquer and bleached animal hide vellum, with sumptuously tufted damask upholstery and gilt mounts. An acclaimed decorator, architect and sculptor, as well as a modernist in furniture design, Arbus exerted a profound influence on architecture and interior design in France.
