Bio
Growing up in the business and inspired to practice landscape architecture by his grandfather and father, Michael Schmechtig joined the company in 1987 bringing together fellow landscape architects and horticulturalists with the same passion to create stunning outdoor environments. This union proved to nurture his love for design.
Schmechtig places a vast amount of pride in his work and focuses on the framework of a landscape to establish form, texture and patterns to achieve a timeless design unique for each project. His mission is to create and maintain outdoor environments that bring people together. In 2009, Schmechtig was profiled in Luxe Magazine. For five consecutive years, beginning in 2005, Schmechtig Landscapes has been privileged to receive Gold and Silver Excellence in Landscape Awards from the Illinois Landscape Contractors Association in both design and maintenance categories. In 2006, Schmechtig was the first firm outside of California to be chosen to compete and complete its “Elegant, Family-Friendly Backyard” design on HGTV’s “Landscapers Challenge”. Celebrating 50 years in the industry, Schmechtig Landscapes continues to serve the finest properties in Chicago and its North Shore and Northwest suburbs affording clients the opportunity to enjoy their dream home.
Schmechtig’s design associate, Toni Callahan, combines love for design, with marketing and project management skills, delivering a fresh approach to the industry. Her unique style cultivates a positive performance development in all areas of a project, securing the vision exceeds all expectations. An experienced marketing professional she’s adept at building relationships with clients, educators, media and industry colleagues. Managing Schmechtig’s projects and client relationships, Callahan coordinates the development, proposal and implementation of a fully integrated turn key approach, ensuring client expectations and overall objectives are delivered resulting in a rewarding and creative experience.

Designing, constructing and maintaining award-winning properties of distinction for 50 years, Schmechtig Landscape Company creates living environments that bring people together. By skillfully listening and taking direction from the client, the architecture style of the residence and the site to utilize design principles of scale, balance, rhythm, layers, color, textures and contrasts, they orchestrate a holistic experience that suitably harmonizes with the homes interior and exterior environments. They treat the landscape of their client’s property as an extension of their home by combining our highly innovative and functional custom design solutions with artesian construction and superb horticultural maintenance services. They create a turn-key experience for our clients that works with their lifestyle and preferences. The end-result is a project that meets and exceeds our client’s expectations and enhances the enjoyment and use of their outdoor living rooms.
