An Art Collector’s Living Room
How does an art collection begin? Perhaps with a casual visit to a gallery, an introduction to an artist’s work by a friend, or a preview at an auction house on a Sunday afternoon. In the case of our collector, it is clear that there is an appreciation of a wide range of media from photography to water colors to works on canvas.
While the conventional wisdom of our generation has advocated that art be exhibited on a neutral white background, we wanted to explore another possibility. Certainly, through the centuries, art has been hung against a rich range of colors and it is this philosophy that we have embraced.
Based on forms found in English Georgian furniture, many of the pieces in this living room are inspired by such Danish and Swedish designers as Kaare Klint, Ole Wanscher, Fritz Henningsen and Carl Malmsten. As for the rest of the furnishings, they are a cohesive blending of designs from the 1930’s through the present day. Ultimately, though, the room’s primary goal is to provide a welcoming sanctuary. Here, the collector can read, relax, dine and entertain in an atmosphere of luxury and comfort.
